MURDER accused ‘LUCKY Man’ Arif Mohamed was yesterday found not guilty of the murder of Jairam Balgobin by a Demerara Assize jury.
After hearing the verdict, Judge Navindra Singh, who had summed up the evidence to the jury in less than two hours before handing over the case to them for their consideration and verdict, told the freed man:
“I believe you are a very lucky man. You should take this second chance to live a good life. You are discharged.”
Arif Mohamed and his father Latiff Mohamed were charged jointly with the murder of Jairam Balgobin on March 4, 2008.
But there was no incriminating evidence against the father, hence his counsel, Mr. Peter Hugh, was able to make a successful no-case submission on behalf of the father.
The no-case submission was made in relation to both accused, but Judge Singh accepted the submission in relation to Latiff, the father, and rejected that in relation to Arif and called on him for a defence.
The police, in their investigations, had found what appeared to be blood stains on the clothing of Arif, who claimed that on the day in question he had a bitter argument with his wife and in the process, had smashed a glass against a post and cut is hand.
He denied any knowledge about the killing of beggar Balgobin.
