PRESIDENT Donald Ramotar said that while government sees merit in Opposition Leader, David Granger’s Motion which called for the appointment of a Commission of Inquiry (COI) to investigate the incidence of criminal violence from 2004 to 2010 in Guyana, it needs to be done in a more holistic and comprehensive manner.

Granger’s Motion states that Guyana has witnessed a pattern of unlawful killings, several of which have been of a deliberate and systematic nature and calls on the President to appoint a COI in accordance with Chapter 19:03 of the Commission of Inquiry Act.
However, President Ramotar said that, “if you are going to go in that direction, then it should be in a comprehensive way as reflected in the amendments that we have put forward…we have to look at the role that some individuals played in the whole process as well.”
He also reminded that many people have suffered during that troubled period and many people have tampered with evidence as well.
The Motion, as well as the amendments put forward by government will be considered at the next parliamentary sitting.
