A TOTAL of 26,320 families benefitted from the Government’s One Laptop Per Family (OLPF) programme in the last year, the Public Relations Officer (PRO), Ms. Stacy Carmichael has reported. She said 50,670 applications were received for 2012 and, of those, 49,775 were actually verified.
Although she could not, now, say how many laptops will be distributed this year, Carmichael noted that the OLPF is partnering with the Great Wall Computer Shenzhen Company Limited of China.
She said the OLPF has already received 5,000 laptops from the Chinese company since October 2012 and another 23,000 are expected to arrive in the country sometime this month.
The Great Wall computers will be distributed this year as all the Haier laptops, which were previously being disbursed, have already been delivered.
Carmichael further announced that 2012 distribution is expected to start very soon.
The People’s Republic of China and the Government of Guyana have entered into a bilateral agreement, through which the laptops manufactured by the Chinese company will be donated to Guyana.
Great Wall Computer was awarded the ‘Most Faithful Enterprise in 2012’ at a Beijing, China summit in September last year and was lauded as the potential force of development that will lay a solid foundation for the future. (Nadine Sanchara)
