GCB releases fixture for Inter-county : … Berbice heavily favoured to retain title

EVEN though they are without the services of their two top spinners in West Indies left-arm orthodox spinner and national T20 skipper Veerasammy Permaul and his spin twin Devendra Bishoo, defending champions Berbice are heavily favoured to take this year’s Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) senior Inter-county 50 overs tournament which bowls off tomorrow. The Assad Fudadin-led Ancient County team still have the services of Sewnarine Chattergoon, Richard Ramdeen, Gajanand Singh and Delbert Hicks, just to name a few, to rely on when the competition gets under way at the Everest and Demerara Cricket Club grounds respectively.
Apart from Permaul and Bishoo, Royston Crandon, Jonathan Foo, Narsingh Deonarine and Rajiv Ivan, are all missing from the this year’s team, as they left yesterday morning with Guyana’s CT20 team to do battle in the Caribbean T20 tournament which will be played in Trinidad and St Lucia.
Nevertheless, the Berbicians, unlike the other teams have been competing in every form of cricket over the past year and even without the abovementioned players can pose a problem to the other teams, especially the perennial whipping boys Essequibo, whom they face in their second round match.
Several prominent players, such as former Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) fast bowler Gilford Moore, Paul Wintz, Zaheer Mohammed, the unrelated Gajanand and Vishal Singh, Ramdeen, Chattergoon, Hicks, Brandon Bess, Keon Joseph, Shemroy Barrington and Ryan Ramdass, all will be looking to stake a claim on the Guyana team for the Regional Super50 competition.
They will be featuring for their respective teams in the local competition, along with several rising stars such as Shimron Hetmyer, Shawn Pereira, Chandrapaul Hemraj, Andre Stoll, Robin Bacchus, Dillon Heyliger, Amir Khan, Eon Hooper and Jason Sinclair.
The bowler to watch keenly would be the Georgetown Cricket Club’s left-arm orthodox spinner Raj Nannan, who has recently been creating problems for the batsmen, especially during the National CT20 assimilation match exercises.
Today’s fixtures would see Berbice, whose lineup includes Krisendat Ramoo and Clinton Pestano, oppose the President’s XI at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground, with players such as Elton Baker, Steven Latcha, Devon Clements and Dexter Solomon, representing the President’s XI outfit.
At the Everest Cricket Club ground, Demerara, who have within their lineup several players who have represented Guyana at various levels and two former Test players in Dowlin and Ramdass, will oppose the Essequibians, for whom Dillon and Jason Heyliger, Herrel and Herry Greene and the hard-hitting Ricardo Adams would be looking to create an impact.
The squads selected for these matches which begins at 09:30hrs are as follows; Demerara Team: Rajendra Chandrika, Ryan Ramdass, Shemroy Barrington, Chandrapaul Hemraj, Vishal Singh, Travis Dowlin, Zaheer Mohamed, Amir Khan, Joseph Perry, Paul Wintz, Kellon Carmichael, Andre Stoll, Robin Bacchus and Totaram Bishun.
