First ever National Song Festival being organised

THE Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, in collaboration with the Ministries of Education and Local Government; Guyana Music Teachers Association (GMTA); religious organisations and National Communications Network (NCN), will be hosting the first ever National Song Festival. In preparation for the event, several auditions will be hosted countrywide and, eventually, participants can win up to $1M in prizes.
The event is designed to provide the opportunity for singing groups across Guyana to compete in two categories. The small-groups category will have between three and 10 persons (trios, quartets, quintets and sextets) while the choirs will range from 15 to 30 members.
The Festival will also offer the benefit of training through music workshops.
Officials of the GMTA said the goal of this initiative is to promote choral singing nationwide, while its objectives encompass the opening for creative expression, as well.
It would also be a forum for the discovery and showcasing of new talent and the fostering of pride through the singing of national songs.
Targeting Regions 2, 3, 4,5, 6, 7 and 10, it is hoped to muster interest and hometown support, with regions competing against regions.
While Regions 1, 8 and 9 have not been included, their omission is solely due to budgetary and logistical constraints, officials involved in the organisation explained.
Being the ministry with overall responsibility for coordinating the rivalry, Culture will be responsible for facilitating the relevant approval for the use of Education Ministry buildings for the purpose of auditions and workshops.
The responsibilities would include assisting in the registration process through distribution and collection of  forms.
The final segment of the Festival will be staged at the National Cultural Centre in Georgetown and the best small group and choir, from each region, will compete for top honours, cash prizes and trophies.
