ANGRY residents of Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara, on Wednesday, handed over, to the police, a man suspected of having attempted to commit rape.
The suspect, whose name was given as Anil, and who is also known in the area by the alias ’Soapy’, is in his late thirties and lives in the Squatting Area with his mother and father. This reporter was heading to another assignment when he saw a crowd on the West Bank Demerara Pubic Road and a closer look revealed that a man was lying on the ground with a piece of rope tied around his waist and the other end in the hands of one of the persons detaining him.
Enquiries revealed that the detained man was being kept pending the police’s arrival after he was apprehended entering a yard to, allegedly, engage a woman in sexual pleasures against her will.
The woman’s brother-in-law, who was at the location, explained that he was alerted to the development by another women who raised an alarm on seeing the man sneaking into the premises.
The police did not go to collect the detainee and residents summoned a taxi and took the man to the station, to where his mother accompanied him.
Some persons in the community described the man as a menace but others said that they are shocked at the allegation against him since he would, usually, provide handyman services for several persons who reside in the area and surroundings.
The man’s feet bore marks but residents said they did not harm him and that he suffered the injuries while trying to escape by jumping over a zinc fence.
Yesterday, though, efforts to ascertain what action, if any, was taken against the man, proved futile. The rank to whom this newspaper spoke claimed not to be aware of the development and asked that a call be placed this morning, when someone will be able to speak about the matter.
