Pomeroon tragedy… : Home Affairs, CPOG deeply regret lives lost

THE Ministry of Home Affairs and the Community Policing Organisation of Guyana (CPOG) have deeply regretted the loss of one of their active members, Ms. Velder Rodrigues of Abrams Creek. The member of the Community Policing Group (CPG) died at 17:30hrs in a boat accident, in the Pomeroon River on December 18.
A Ministry press release said: “Our condolences are sent out to the relatives of Ms. Rodrigues and we wish to advise all boat captains to comply with the rules of the road at sea.”
Condolences were also conveyed to the other families who lost their loved ones in that boat accident.
Essequibo Police confirmed that six persons were killed and several injured on December 18, after two speedboats collided along the Pomeroon River in the vicinity of Siriki.
Police said the collision, involving a Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam) Administration vessel transporting One Laptop Per Family (OLPF) staff, and another powered by a 200 horse power (HP) engine carrying passengers collided head-on around 17:00hrs.
The other deceased are Harrinarine Bhagwandin, Shawn Anthony, 14 , also of Adams Creek; Rajkumar Singh, 14, of Charity Housing Scheme, Essequibo Coast, his sister, Amerita Singh, 10 and uncle, Vincent Singh, 40, of Adams Creek, too.
The captain of the Region’s vessel was in custody assisting with the investigations.
None of the 13 persons who were in that boat suffered any injuries.
