GFA/Banks Beer Knockout Cup … : Lop-sided defeats continue in round-of-sixteen : … GDF, Net Rockers in Christmas Day action

SANTOS Football Club crushed the University of Guyana (UG) team 12–0 in the feature match on Sunday night when the Guyana Football Association (GFA)-organised Banks Beer Knockout Cup continued at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground. It was another lop-sided match since Santos, once a local Premier League team, had much more experience than the young and very inexperienced UG team, who had their hands full at the first division level.
This Santos win eclipsed the previous match on the opening night when Fruta Conquerors thrashed Flamingo 11–0.
Prior to Santos’ victory which got them into the quarter-finals, Northern Rangers squeezed passed Blueberry Hill 2–1 to also book a spot there.
The round-of-sixteen ends tonight with another double-header at the GCC ground where Black Pearl FC will meet the technically-correct Guyana Defence Force (GDF) team in the opening match at 18:00hrs then the Guyana Police Force go head-to-head with Net Rockers FC at 20:00hrs.
On Sunday night in the feature, Michael Pedro recorded a helmet-trick while his team mate Gerald Whittington scored a hat-trick. A brace from William Europe and single goals from other teammates led to Santos’ progress.
Whittington scored in the very first minute of play and in the 32nd while Pedro scored in the 17th and 28th, Europe recorded a 25th minute goal and Jermain Bamfield struck in the 44th minute as the first half concluded with Santos ahead by six goals.
In the second half, Whittington completed his hat-trick in the 56th minute while Pedro had goals in the 48th and 75th minutes to complete his helmet-trick. Europe’s brace came about with a 78th minute goal while Jermaine Fraser (51st) and Leron Charles (70th) picked up a goal each.
Earlier in the night, Linden’s Blueberry Hill drew first blood against Northern Rangers in the second minute of the second half after battling to a goalless first half.
Shemroy Dover found the back of the net for Blueberry Hill in the 47th minute but the opposition soon equalised through a Sherwin Vincent strike in the 57th minute. Northern Rangers then went ahead and kept the lead until the regulation time to secure the win. Jermaine Scott scored the decider for Northern Rangers in the 77th minute.
