A Christmas party for children and senior citizens was yesterday held in honour of the late Presidents Cheddi and Janet Jagan, at their former home, now converted into a Heritage Home, at Belvoir Court, Bel Air, Greater Georgetown.
Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, gracing the occasion with his presence, mingled with the kids and elders, as did Chairman of the Bel Air/Prashad Nagar People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Group, Collin Croal.
The party saw the attendance of children and senior citizens from Bel Air, North Sophia and Liliendaal, among many other areas.
They were each treated to snacks, food, drinks, ice cream and a gift from Santa Claus himself. Funding for the event comes from many private and small donors, and many persons volunteered to help, thus contributing to the success of the initiative.
Chairman of the Bel Air/Prashad Nagar People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Group, Collin Croal told the gathering that this event is being hosted ever since former President Mrs. Janet Jagan had resided at the home.
He stated that she loved everyone, especially children, and she would normally put a lot of effort into having this event put together.
He also acknowledged everyone who turned out to the occasion despite the weather conditions.
In delivering his remarks, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds began by wishing everyone a merry Christmas and a joyous and prosperous New Year.
He stated that Christmas is a time for everyone, especially children as they look forward to the joy of having new and exciting things.
He recalled that as a child, he would remember his grandmother would be getting full into the season from days before, preparing ginger beer, soaking sorrel and making fly.
He further stated that he was celebrating in the days of salted butter which made the delicious black cakes to be shared.
In these days, things have become so modernized that there is absolutely no worries of having to do the things such as “butter washing”.
He also reminisced the house to house caroling groups who would always pass by for a bit black cake and ginger beer.
In those days there were certain things which were seen only once a year and that is at Christmas, the prime minister noted.
He indicated that over the past 20 years, things in the country have become far better.
He acknowledged all the persons who made their contributions, and noted that he is pleased to see the children and the elders there and it would be a privilege to have them present next year as well.
