I AM deeply disappointed with the decision of the selection committee not to appoint Dr Jaipaul Singh to the position of Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guyana.
Dr. Singh was not only the most qualified of the candidates, but he has already given yeoman service by arranging for countless graduates from the university to pursue advanced studies in the United Kingdom.
He accompanied former President Bharrat Jagdeo to India on his last visit and was instrumental in negotiating for financial and human assistance from Indian universities for the University of Guyana.
In addition, Dr Singh is internationally recognised as a leading expert in his field, and is held in high regard by the academic community across the globe. The University of Guyana stood to gain millions of dollars from international assistance from the influence of Dr Singh and I am befuddled by the logic of the selection committee to overlook someone who would have been a great asset to the university.
