Dean highlights Digicel 2012 achievements, charitable activities

DIGICEL (Guyana) has launched a Christmas promotion with the lowest handset offer of $2,500, the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Gregory Dean announced Thursday. He told an end-of-year press conference, at the Fort and Barrack Streets, Kingston, Georgetown headquarters that, since Digicel came to Guyana in 2007, it is the lowest bargain offered so far and the response has been quite favourable.
Dean said, in terms of price, the Blackberry is going at $40,000.
He said there is a ‘Go Galaxy’ campaign through which customers are topping up to spell the word galaxy to win handsets for a family of three and some customers will soon collect theirs.
Dean announced, too, that this season, the company will share cheer to charities in which children’s homes would be targeted and the feeding programme will continue right up to Christmas Day.
He said, among the major activities undertaken in the educational, social and cultural areas, the Mahaica Children’s Home was the biggest project from a charitable point of view.

Dean explained that, apart from delivering toys and meals, Digicel wanted to do more and, as such, is building a new home for the children, for which the company is working with the builders to have the construction completed for occupation by February 2013.
He reported that the National Drama Festival was a success for the second year and the company is pleased with the number of plays that were organised in a two to three weeks period.
The Mashramani campaign was also deemed resoundingly successful for Digicel.
Dean said Digicel also had the ‘Back to School’ distribution exercise after linking up with the Rotary Club for the dental programme and the backpack disbursement promotions.
He said, in the sporting arena, the focus was on youth development in football, track and field, swimming and table tennis and the company is quite happy with the way those tournaments went this year.
Dean said the biggest sponsorship is in sports and their aim is to work with the schools’ football teams from the grassroots level and have sponsored squash and hockey as well as horse racing, which is a big sport in Berbice.
