TWO men found guilty of trafficking five and a half grammes of cocaine were, each, sentenced to three years imprisonment by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at New Amsterdam Court, in Berbice, yesterday. Adonie Fletcher called ‘Donie’ and Darren Edwards were also fined $30,000, individually, with the alternative of six weeks imprisonment.
A third defendant, Leon Woolford alias ‘Weeble’, had, previously pleaded guilty to the offence and was also given a similar sentence.
Police Corporal Orin Joseph, prosecuting, had led evidence from three witnesses who testified that, on December 28, 2011, ranks visited the home of Fletcher to search for arms, ammunition and illegal drugs.
On approaching the St. John Street residence, Fletcher was seen standing at his door and the two other defendants were, subsequently, found hiding under the bed in a room. Edwards and Woolford told the police that they were friends of Fletcher.
While they were searching, a green, white and red plastic container was found and on opening it, sixty small whitish rock like substance, suspected to be cocaine was unearthed.
Joseph said Fletcher had, initially, confessed being the owner of the narcotic and had even offered to pay the policemen some money as he is a cocaine seller.
