THE Women’s Entrepreneurship Network (WENET) and the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) will host Guyana’s first ever Women’s Enterprise Exposition (WEnEx) at the Hotel Tower on Monday November, 26 from 14:00hrs to 19:00hrs.
The exposition will be held under the theme ‘Female Exhibit for Empowerment and Equality: Stimulating Female Independence, Safety, and Success in Guyana.”
This is according to President of the GCCI, Clinton Urling, in a press conference at the Chamber’s boardroom on Waterloo Street, Georgetown, yesterday.
Mr. Urling said that the Chamber met with a representative of the WENET a couple months ago and explored the opportunity of hosting this event.
Noting that the Chamber sits on a group called the National Working Group, which is responsible for implementing the Millennium Development Goals, he said that they made a commitment to host an event to advance goal number three, which deals with gender equality and women’s empowerment.
As such, “when the proposal was sent from WENET to host the exposition, the Chamber accepted and that’s how the partnership began,” he related.
Speaking at the press conference, one of the directors of the exposition, and Peace Corps volunteer, Tina Camera, said that the event comprises women from varying backgrounds bent on creating an opportunity for networking, marketing, mentorship and support.
“We encourage the public to take advantage of this opportunity to raise awareness of the availability of employment and volunteerism from these groups. By exposing Guyana’s finest, the public will learn the possibilities of what can transpire from the true working capacity of Guyanese women,” she emphasised.
Ms. Camera related that there will be a display of products and services from 30 registered groups, including the Ministry of Health, Child Protection Agency, Help and Shelter and the Women and Gender Equality Commission.
She added that there will be a panel discussion on gender equality in Guyana. The panel will include President of the Women Miners Association, Simona Broomes; Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Jennifer Webster; Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Guyana, Dr. Paloma Mohamed; and Member of Parliament, Valerie Lowe.
Meanwhile, another Director of the exposition and WENET coordinator, Kendra Borutski, related that the network was established in May, 2011, and over the past 12 months, it has evolved into a successful organization of 70 female entrepreneurs in Georgetown. She said that the businesses that are part of WENET include catering, fashion designing and beauty salons.
