IT was a miracle that no one was killed or even injured yesterday when a speeding Toyota Allion motor car, PPP 831 proceeding west along the Lusignan Embankment Road clipped the front of a Starlet Turbo and crashed onto the embankment bridge, causing a horrific ‘smash-up’.
The driver of the badly wrecked silver grey Toyota Allion emerged unhurt, and so did driver of the burgundy Starlet Turbo, PJJ 255 – Devi Narine and her 10-year-old nephew. They were all badly traumatised and were taken to the Vigilance Police Station where both drivers gave statements on the accident.
The accident happened around 14:30 hrs as Narine, was returning home after buying cooking gas. She was heading south, crossing the embankment road and was accompanied by her 10-year-old nephew.
Narine said she observed the basic road safety rules of slowing down and looking both sides before crossing. The woman said her recollection is that the road was clear and she proceeded to cross. She said she had already cleared about three quarters of the width of the road when the Allion, PPP 831 (driven by a young man) ‘appeared out of nowhere’ and ‘lashed’ the front of her car.
The woman phoned her father, Ricky Narine and the Vigilance Police, who hastened down to the scene. After initial investigations, the errant driver of the badly wrecked Toyota Allion was taken into custody and his motor car – the property of an auto-rental service was towed to the Vigilance Police Station by a crash truck.
