MEMBERS of the media were taken on a walk-through at the Botanical Gardens, Thursday, to view several enhancements that are being made, courtesy of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) and the Ministry of Tourism and Commerce, as part of activities planned for Tourism Awareness Month.
Very noticeable was the installation and painting of speed humps on the road in the gardens, an effort to reduce the speed of the drivers traversing in and out, and signs being put at strategic locations to indicate the speed limit.
There is also the refurbishing of the plaque dedicated to bird watchers, painting of the bandstand, the walk-way, benches, plant pots, and the installation of a welcome sign at the back of the gardens.
“It’s not something that we decide out of wishful thinking. It is a project that involves partnership and everything we do at GTA and the Ministry, we do by trying to create a lot of value,” Indranauth Haralsingh, Director of GTA said.
He stated that the Ministry initiates projects jointly with other organisations so that the cost can be shared and corporate Guyana would be able to give back.
The Botanical Gardens have been declared a bird sanctuary because of the 167 species of birds that choose to live there, and is a place where persons can relax with family and friends.
Haralsingh pointed out that the ministry will continue to work with the management of the gardens in order to enhance visitors’ experience.
The Botanical Gardens, Penta Paint, Harris Paints, University of Guyana students, the National Park Commission, the Guyana Amazon Tropical Bird Society and the Ministry of Public works were among the partners onboard with the project.
