GYSM hosts blood drive in collaboration with National Blood Bank

The Guyana Youth and Student Movement (GYSM) is lending support to the National Blood Bank’s ‘Good Samaritan’ programme. The youth movement on Wednesday held the first of its three-day blood drives that saw more than 20 persons voluntarily donating blood. The first to donate were the members of the University of Guyana Rugby Team, most of whom were first time donors. altChairman of the GYSM and Member of Parliament, Mr. Christopher Jones, also donated blood for the first time. He said he had initial fears regarding needles when donating blood, but overcame them quickly as a result of the courteous, encouraging, friendly staff and atmosphere at the blood bank.

This GYSM gesture is to assist the blood bank to reach its 100% mark for the year. The bank collection currently stands at 85% of its target for the year.
Jones noted that this venture is just one of the many humanitarian activities that the GYSM will be involved in. He called on members of the general public to become volunteer donors, as the process, which takes just about 15 minutes, comes with health benefits, as it gives the body an opportunity to replenish red blood cells.

Jones says he has learnt that one pint of blood can save three lives.

Today People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) Executives, GYSM Executives and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Members of Parliament will donate blood at the National Blood Bank on Lamaha Street.
