MCYS presents cheque to QC

HAVING achieved the aim to further strengthen sports within the school’s curriculum, the Board of Governors for the Camp Road-based Queen’s College (QC) has now turned their attention towards the construction of a new pavilion on the school’s ground.

altOn 28th September last, Human Resources Director of De Sinco Trading, Alicia De Abreu handed over a cheque for G$1.5M, towards the construction of a new pavilion and yesterday Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony threw in the Ministry’s lot with an undisclosed cheque.
According to Director of Sport Neil Kumar, Dr Anthony has always been paying specific interest in sports development in communities and schools and the contribution to QC is no different.
“Government for the past two years has allocated $100M each year to the development of sports in schools and communities and we have been working with schools and communities to allocate this money,” said Dr Anthony.
He added, “We have already disbursed close to $32M and the rest of the $100M, we will be disbursing that over the next month or so to the various communities. Almost all of the various Regions, we’ve had a number of schools and that’s how we are spending the money.”
Dr Anthony said QC was asking since last year for some assistance for the development of their ground, a drive that was started by Managing Director of DeSinco Trading Limited Frank De Abreu, who was involved in a serious accident two weeks ago, while returning from the school where he was looking at the progress of the work that is going on.
“One person who was very instrumental in getting this work on the way, Mr Frank De Abreu would normally call me and keep me on my toes, with regard to uplifting this cheque. We know he met a very unfortunate and serious accident and we wish him a speedy recovery, as the work he has done in QC, especially with sports, is tremendous and commendable,” stated Dr Anthony.
He called on other business communities in Corporate Guyana to throw in their support to the project, one he describes as a worthy cause.
In her thank-you remarks, Deputy Headmistress (ag) Lenise Parker who was accompanied by four fourth form students, expressed the school’s sincere gratitude for the timely donation from the MCYS on behalf of the Principal, adding that the school is in dire need of a pavilion.
“At QC, we do not focus on academics alone, but extra-curricular activities within the school, and giving a pavilion will not only boost those activities for the students, but also make it meaningful and I know that this will help us in realising our dreams.”
The cost to construct the pavilion is G$14M, of which the QC Parent-Teacher Association and the QC Old Students Association (New York) Chapter donated G$1M each and QCOSA (Worldwide) G$2M, which together with the MCYS and De Sinco’s donation, leave the body needing G$5.5M more.
