The 2012/13 Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Super League kicked off over the weekend and continued on Wednesday last with a total of five games being contested by the ten teams.
On Sunday, BK International Western Tigers got off to a winning start with a 1-0 result over Uitvlugt Warriors at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground while Buxton United defeated Den Amstel at the Uitvlugt Ground, 2-1.
Also securing full points were Upper Demerara’s Milerock who, like Buxton United, defeated their hosts, Rosignol United, 3-2 at the Blairmont Community Centre ground.
At the BV ground, the home team and visitors Amelia’s Ward of Linden battled to an intriguing 3-3 draw while the lone mid-week game between defending champions Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United and Pele ended in a stalemate.
The lone goal in the Western Tigers/Uitvlugt Warriors encounter was netted by Domini Garnett in the 54th minute, even though Uitvlugt, who were playing in their debut season at this level, gave a good account for themselves and proved they are no pushovers.
The clash between hosts Den Amstel and Buxton United saw Andre Hector push Den Amstel into the lead as early as the second minute but the opposition equalised through the experienced Clive Andries in the sixth minute.
Buxton then went ahead in the tenth minute when Michael Phyll found the back of the net which poised the match 2–1 until regulation time.
At the Uitvlugt ground, Rosignol cantered into the lead in the 16th minute thanks to a Cornel Taylor 16th-minute strike but that lasted until the 23rd minute when Milerock’s Beneakaman Smartt scored then his teammate Clarence Huggins gained the lead for his side two minutes later.
As the exchanges continued Rosignol equalised in the 36th minute through Newt Mahaica then an own goal by Rosignol was all Milerock needed to take the win.
At the BV ground, BV jumped into a 2-0 lead by the 20th minute compliments of a brace from Reon Hopkinson who scored in the third minute first. But the veteran Travis Waterton eased Amelia’s Ward back into contention in the 36th minute while Gavin Daw equalising in the 46th minute.
Amelia’s Ward took the lead for the first time in the match when Carlos Grant rocked the nets in the 54th minute, before Delroy Deen made sure his side shared in the points when he banged home the equaliser in the 77th minute to ease the tension for the team and fans.
The competition continues this Sunday with another five matches as Den Amstel face Western Tigers at the Uitvlugt ground at 13:30hrs then Uitvlugt go head-to-head with Alpha United from 15:30hrs.
At the Buxton ground BV Triumph meet Milerock, and Buxton United clash with Pele at 13:30hrs and 15:30hrs, respectively and at the GFC ground, Rosignol United battle Amelia’s Ward from 15:30hrs.
