BEFORE the establishment of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (COI), as agreed to by all the parliamentary political parties and civil society, there were many facts, being publicly aired by many interested parties about what really happened and/or allegations in Linden during the protests there.
President Donald Ramotar immediate decision to investigate these events led to the parliamentary political parties hammering out the now known terms of
Reference of the Commission of Inquiry and agreeing on its composition.
For the average Guyanese, the fundamental purpose of the Commission was the search for truth and make appropriate recommendations.
It is undeniable that so far, the Commission has provided Guyanese among other things, information, facts that otherwise were either unavailable or disputed.
The standard of the Inquiry notwithstanding, truth remains an undeniable output of the hearings.
Not daring to challenge truth, voices are organizing to do everything but challenge truth and even to discredit the activities of the Commission which composition was agreed to by all parties.
Sadly, thinly veiled attacks on the Commissioners individually and/or jointly have suffered.
Lamentations about deviations from exalted international best practices are being voiced by so-called experts who have all aligned themselves to political processes.
Like before the start of the work of the Commission, suggestions of an unsympathetic anti-victim Commission are subtly being peddled.
Organisation of sentiments for the rejection of the Commission’s findings is openly being done and being justified.
Rejection of the use of the Commission’s findings is logically the ulterior motive behind these outpourings.
It is from such perspectives that Guyanese should read and understand that Stabroek News’ letter from the diaspora (individuals who are known political operatives) carried on Wednesday, October 31, 2012 entitled “the Linden Commission of Inquiry cannot be seen making a case for the authorities”.
Similar sentiments will continue to be advanced more or less subtly but all with one purpose to tarnish and to diminish the fact-finding mission and results of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry.
