Three High Court judges sworn in by President Ramotar

JUSTICES Naresh Harnanan, Sandra Kurtzious and Navindra Singh took the oath before President Donald Ramotar yesterday, as newly appointed puisine judges, vowing to uphold the constitution in their new functions.

altIt is hoped that the three judges will be of some help in reducing the challenges of inadequate number of jurists and backlog of cases which the judiciary has been facing for some time.
President Ramotar, in brief remarks, expressed the hope that the new appointments will also have a profound impact on the timeliness and court cases, since “justice delayed is justice denied.”
“I look forward to hard work and trying to ensure that… people will not be incarcerated for a long time, President Ramotar said.
In brief comments to the Government Information Agency (GINA), each of the judges who will be serving in the High Court division, vowed to serve the people to the best of their ability with efficiency and impartiality. They were thankful to the Judicial Service Commission and the President for their approval.
Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, who joined Chancellor of the Judiciary (ag) Carl Singh and Chief Justice (ag) Ian Chang to witness the installation, was asked by media operatives about the appointment of more criminal judges to expedite trials.
“I have no doubt that once the need is recognised for an additional judge on the criminal circuit, that possibly, one of these judges, or one of the existing judges will be assigned to increase the complement of judges dealing with the assizes,” Minister Nandlall said.
The October Criminal Session in Demerara opened on October 2, with 226 cases, including 180 murders, pending.
