‘We must reflect on obedience to the highest authority’: PNCR

EID-UL-ADHA commemorates the faith and trust that the Prophet Abraham had in the Creator who determined that Abraham should sacrifice his son by taking his life. It is safe to assume that Allah wished to test Abraham’s faith and the depth of his belief, by being willing to sacrifice his own child. However, Allah recognized that Abraham, having passed this test, prepared an animal as a substitute and so spared the life of his son.

As Muslims in Guyana and throughout the world celebrate this event, we need to reflect on the utility of obedience to the highest authority. Our Creator will not test us in overbearing circumstances.

Given the deteriorated conditions which confront us daily, primarily as a consequence of the continuing failures of governance, we are forced to repeat, from our 2010 message, the following:

“It is unfortunate that harmony and development in Guyana is hampered by: ethnic tensions; threats to the security and safety of life and property of the average citizen; the frightening rise in domestic violence; the escalating murder rate; the overwhelming influence and negative impact of narco-trafficking; endemic corruption at all levels; gross violations of human rights: the decline in moral values in public life; the growing army of Guyanese who are being driven into poverty by the harsh impact of the cost-of-living, due, in part, to the unconscionable 16% VAT; and the glaring failures of the education system.”

As we observe our nation’s objective circumstances and interpret the lessons from the Holy Quran, this Eid ul-Adha should remind all Guyanese, Muslims and non-Muslims alike, that we need to commit ourselves to the building of an inclusive society in which there is unity, harmony, justice, equity and a sense of decency at all levels.

The People’s National Congress Reform joins with all Muslims and, since we were the architect of making this a public holiday, we also join with all Guyanese at home and abroad to wish one and all a Happy Eid ul-Adha.
