Black Bush Polder rice production increases, price lowered

THE Chairman of Black Bush Polder Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC), Mr. Tackoor Persaud reported that, while developmental works are continuing in the agricultural community, some rice farmers are reaping their crops, thus putting additional pressure on the region. He explained that some of the farmers who cultivated 60,000 acres have not sown at the same time but at various periods, resulting in varying reaping seasons and creating pressure on the regional pumps.
Persaud is, therefore, urging planters to cultivate the land simultaneously.
Additionally, he observed that there is excess rice yield, all of which buyers are unable to purchase as this crop has produced 32 bags per acre. Due to the increased production, the price has been lowered from $70,000 to $58,000 per metric ton.
Persaud also said that, during the last crop, 42,000 acres were put under the plough but the yield was less because of excessive rainfall, which had also affected the cash crop farmers at three of the four polders, Mibicuri, Johanna and Yakusari.
Besides that, the chairman said the rehabilitation of the 22 miles main thoroughfare is on schedule with 18 miles completed. He said 17 internal roads have been reconstructed with $3M received from Central Government.
