THE October criminal sessions at the Berbice Assizes opened last Tuesday, with 73 jurors, the largest number ever since the commencement of trials at that court.
Justice Roxanne George, who had earlier taken the salute during a march past by female ranks of the Neighbourhood Police outside the High Court building in New Amsterdam, complemented the attendees while reminding them of the importance of jury service. “Jury service is important, even though employers complain. It is practised in over fifty countries, including ours and, as long as we have the jury system, we will need twelve persons for a panel,” the judge emphasised.
Meanwhile, 49 accused persons are listed for trial during the sessions which will conclude in February 2013. Of that number, Bench warrants have been issued for 12 persons, including former Magistrate’s Court Clerk, Nigel Small, who faces charges of being in possession of a firearm without licence, falsification of accounts and six counts of embezzlement by public officer.
Also on the list, signed by Acting Registrar, Bibi Shabeda Ali, is accused high seas pirate, Ram Sookdial alias Kevin Narine, currently incarcerated in Suriname; alleged Rose Hall bank robbers, Terrence Azore, Marlon Lepps and Henry Lindy and Herman Ali called ‘Shark Oil’, who is indicted for murder.
