Witness in ‘Picture Boy’ murder trial tells jury about finding AK-47 rifle

DEPUTY Police Superintendent Linden Lord yesterday told a mixed jury at the Demerara Assizes of the day he and a party of policemen and soldiers went in search of wanted men and had found the accused, Cyon Collier, called “Picture Boy”, at a house at Adventure, where they found weaponry, including an AK-47 rifle.

The officer was testifying at the continuation of the double murder trial which continued yesterday before Justice Diana Insanally and a mixed jury.
According to the prosecution, conducted by Senior State Counsel Mrs. Judith Mursalin, sometime during the early hours of the morning of September 23, 2006, a group of young men were playing dominoes at the Victoria Four-Corner on the East Coast of Demerara when two brothers, Ray Walcott, called ‘Sugar’, and Carl Andrews, called ‘Alo’, who were standing nearby watching the game, were gunned down by the accused.
The prosecution’s case is that the accused rode up on a motor cycle with a gun slung over his shoulder. He began gaffing with the men, and suddenly began shooting, fatally wounding the two brothers.
Dept. Supt. Lord said that during the month of October, 2006, he was stationed at the Vigilance Police Station. On Thursday, 5th October, 2006, at about 05:15 hrs, he and a party of policemen and soldiers were on a cordon-and-search exercise at Bachelor’s Adventure, East Coast Demerara when they conducted a search at a house at Lot  23 Bachelor’s Adventure.
According to a witness, Detective Inspector Kingston, a member of the search party, he contacted the accused in the said house, and told him that he was in receipt of information that he had murdered Carl Andrews and Ray Walcott on Saturday, September 23, 2006 at Victoria, East Coast, Demerara by shooting them with an AK-47 rifle.
Witness said that in his presence, Inspector Kingston carried out a search on a bed in the said house where the accused was, and found an AK-47 rifle and a .25 Astra pistol on the said bed.
In presence of the accused, he carried out a search under the said bed, where he found a Mosburg Pump Action shot gun, No. 1 745387, and 8 live 12-guage cartridges.

The accused was arrested and escorted to the Cove & John Police Station where the arms and ammunition were also taken.
Under cross-examination by defence counsel, Mr. Lyndon Amsterdam, witness admitted that there were a number of inconsistencies in his evidence he gave at the preliminary inquiry and that now being given at the jury trial, but Prosecutor Mursalin interjected to point out that defence counsel was confusing omissions with inconsistencies.

The hearing continues on Monday.
