Health Ministry seeking scholarships in pathology : – Ramsaran

THE Ministry of Health is working towards securing scholarships in pathology for Guyanese desirous of pursuing this medical field, Minister with the portfolio, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran told media. Guyana, currently, has two pathologists and has need for more professionals in that field, he said in a recent interview.
Ramsaran disclosed that, several months ago, he had approached the relevant authorities to source scholarships in that medical discipline and, at the same time, graduate doctors were encouraged to start in-house training.
He said the necessity for pathologists has also been taken to the level of Cabinet, where a request was made for the scholarships to be sourced in Cuba where many Guyanese doctors have received medical training.
Minister Ramsaran pointed out that specialists are not only needed in pathology, but in other areas such as psychiatry and surgery.
Meanwhile, specialist training programmes in medicine, paediatrics, neonatology, neurology and oncology are now being offered at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), with support from overseas universities.
Dr. Nehaul Singh is the only pathologist at the GPH.
