THE Guyana Government will, within a month, establish an oversight body, with itself as prime partner, for the operations of Ogle International Airport (OIA), at East Coast Demerara.
That agency, also comprising all stakeholders, would look at the best strategies for the development of the terminal and opportunities for regional expansion of how it operates.
The plan was disclosed by Minister of Transport and Hydraulics, Mr. Robeson Benn during the commissioning of the Bell 206 helicopter acquired by Air Services Limited (ASL), making the company the first ever operator of such a privately-owned commercial service.
He said that an outstanding issue in the domestic airline industry is with respect to Government’s facilitation of how Ogle Airport operates.
“There is an arrangement in respect of the OIA, which requires that there be an oversight body and there have been some changes along the way with respect to how it should be put together but we intend, over the next month, to put in place such a body which will bring together proper oversight from all of the partners,” Benn assured.
He said the entity will be about how best all stakeholders can put their heads together to fashion the OIA and how best they can look at the challenges with respect to optimising the new runway and other facilities and the investment the Government of Guyana has made, in terms of air trafffic control equipment and other necessities.
Benn explained, further, that the group to be set up within a month would be examining, as well, the best arrangement to see a proper resolution of issues, sometimes of conflict, which may arise among stakeholders.
The grouping would also look at what challenges may surface from time to time, how the work on the ground could be arranged in the best way to ensure that management maps out, the points of least resistance to developing the OIA and its regional thrust.
