BEING a tourism advocate, it comes with training conducted by the Organisation of American States (OAS) as a Tour Guide. That has also propelled me into becoming an independent and adventurous photo journalist in my own right.
I have had persons from Greece, Trinidad, Pakistan, Costa Rica etc. view my production work and compliment me for them. The most recent assignment was covering the 2012 Goodwill Swimming Competition at the Aquatic Centre with 189 photo images and a friend from Trinidad enquired if I was using one of those high-tech cameras with the changeable lens, because my images were impressive. My gadget is low tech.
This has been my approach in highlighting and educating the globe via images of Guyana and I get absolutely no funding from anyone or agency. It’s my independent and unimaginable sacrifices.I have always loved the following quote by the late US President, John F.Kennedy: it’s not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country..
When I penned a past correspondence via the dailies that pertained to the boosting of Region 3 when the Synthetic Track Project ( Leonora village) is completed, it was me using that potential location/site to continue promoting Guyana through sports. At the same time, both overseas and local visitors (other regions) could have another option in visiting the track site whenever a meet/competition is in progress..
I was critical of the government of the day’s decision on several occasions via the dailies in having that track site located at Leonora and wonder to this day the reason for not having a multi-purpose sports complex at Providence or having that track located in Georgetown. At the end of the day, it’s the government’s decision and there is absolutely nothing I can do about that.
The foundation is already in place and whether we like it or not, that’s where the track will be located.
So, in reality, it matters not how much we groan about expenses, transportation costs etc., for athletes, they will make it one way or the other in reaching Leonora village for practice and competition. If it means that one has to begin saving from now, so be it.
Also, when I stated in another correspondence that eventually the annual Linden track meet will be phased out and shifted to the synthetic track, it is simply because that’s the reality and again we have got to accept it one way or the other.
I base this on the fact that if the Linden track meet is sanctioned by the Ministry of Sport, along with The Athletics Association of Guyana and athletes have at their disposal a synthetic track at Leonora village to elevate themselves, especially with their respective race/personal best timings in order to be considered for selection for regional or international competitions, I honestly don’t believe any athlete from Linden would want to pass up such an opportunity. Unless the annual Linden track meet is about the music and in that case, it doesn’t tell me much about progress with the track and field athletes of Guyana.
Mr. Claudius Prince, I respectfully welcomed your KN report dated Sunday, August 26, 2012, captioned “What is it about Leonora that makes it ideal for this sports facility?”
You made reference to a few articles I penned in the past which is absolutely fine with me, but please understand that I have no affiliation to the government of the day and absolutely no affiliation to any sports associations/committees/agencies..I also have no such desire/ambition on sitting on any sports committee..I am simply an” Independent Sports Enthusiast” who is based in the fields…I also need the track athletes to understand that I am not the enemy.
