CHAIRMAN of the Implementation Committee at City Hall, Keith Burrowes, announced yesterday that a one-week campaign to bring the garbage disposal situation in Georgetown back to normalcy will be started by the City Council today with the support of his team and central government. Burrowes disclosed that the committee will provide four trucks to the City Council and the opening hours of the Haags Bosch landfill will be extended by two hours to accommodate the anticipated increase in activities.
He also disclosed that his Implementation Committee has identified the old incinerator in Georgetown as a holding area for garbage which cannot be disposed of when the East Bank site is closed.
Persons can take their garbage there from where it will be eventually transported by City Council trucks to the Haags Bosch landfill.
He stressed: “If you take your garbage to Haags Bosch and find that that site is closed, bring it back to the incinerator and dump it there and nowhere else,” he said.
He said too that the campaign will have an element of enforcement of the laws .
He warned, “People who are caught dumping garbage in areas which have already been cleared as a result of this campaign will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”
He urged the business community to give its fullest support to the one- week clean-up campaign and disclosed that additional details will be made public as it unfolds.
Burrowes had compiled a report on the state of affairs at the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) some years ago and had listed several recommendations that he felt would have helped in turning the entity around.
However, one of the members of the committee, Ramon Gaskin, had subsequently reported that the recommendations were not being implemented.
Gaskin found that there was also a great deal of mismanagement of the work of the Council, as well as financial irregularities involving some of its officials .
The Ministry of Local Government has since tasked Burrowes with providing oversight of the M&CC and for ensuring that the recommendations for its improved efficiency are implemented.
