The Government of Guyana is hoping that a resolution to the Linden issues will be reached today following yesterday’s meeting that lasted approximately three hours between the government side and that of the Region Ten Administration and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU). This is according to Presidential Adviser on Governance Ms. Gail Teixeira who spoke to the state media minutes after the two sides concluded their meeting at the Office of the President last evening.
Ms. Teixeira said that there has been quite a lot of progress between the two sides and they are expected to meet again today at 16:00 hours when according to Teixeira they would advance towards resolutions to all the matters.
She said that it was always the government’s intention to have the Linden issues settled but the goal post continued to be shifted. She said that three of the four areas that are presently being negotiated have been settled and there remains one other issue that she expects to close off the negotiations.
The Presidential Adviser said that the government side hopes that there is one common language that is understood by both sides today that see linden returning to normalcy while pointing out that the electricity tariff increase has been taken off the table and will be looked at by committee and who wil present periodic reports.
Ms. Teixeira said that the names of the commission has been agreed to and will be announced by Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr. Roger Luncheon today. Asked about the president’s visit to Linden madam Teixeira said that the president is very excited and anxious to go to linden and that will be done very soon.
Speaking after the meeting last evening APNU chairman dr. Rupert Roopnarine said that the two sides are in a better position than they were previously and said that significant progress have been made during yesterday’s discussions.
Dr. Roopnarine said that based on the discussion yesterday he anticipated that the talks will not take much longer. He said that he hopes that the talks are concluded before Saturday in light of the planned Massive Demonstration that the Region 10s Chairman Sharma Solomon spoke about.
