COURTS Guyana Inc. has given $500,000 to the University of Guyana (UG) for its 8th collaborative ‘Reading is Fun Programme’, which commences on August 4, and targets children between the ages of nine and 12 from Sophia, Greater Georgetown. The programme allows Courts to fulfill its corporate responsibility, in keeping with its mission of “Adding Value Everyday”.
UG Vice-Chancellor, Dr Lawrence Carrington expressed gratitude on behalf of the university, and also spoke of the impact and importance of literacy on lives.
Meanwhile, Courts’ Director of Customer Services, Rawle Dundas, said the furniture giant is pleased to be associated with the programme, and it is the Courts’ way of giving back to society.
“We have donated half-million dollars towards this programme, and we have gotten the feedback from the children that have been attending these training.”
Dundas, said that, over the years, Courts Guyana Inc has been increasingly investing in and expanding the programme, since it has proven to be very beneficial to the children attending.
“We feel that we shouldn’t just leave the programme one way, but expand it. …it is a yearly programme during the August holidays,” Dundas said.
The programme will run for three weeks, and will be held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Since its commencement in 2003, each programme has attracted more than 100 children.
