THE silly politics will destroy this nation. It is so evident that those who launched the sustained campaign against the state media are now trying to use the Guyana Chronicle’s recently published editorial to incite ethnic strife. The mere mention of an opinion in an editorial cannot itself constitute or promote racism or discrimination against persons of African descent. In any case, the editorial was not unique in its views at all and this is a well documented fact.
I would not be dishonest to say it was the best written editorial;in my view, it could have been written better but overall, one cannot conveniently disregard contextual-value in their consideration of the editorial content. Editorials are generally context-driven and sometimes semantics play a significant role in determining different perspectives.
It is clear that the author was trying to give enough vivid detail to allow her readers to understand a situation that permeates the minds of thousands of Guyanese. There have been so many references before to the PNCR-sponsored doctrines that misused and misguided young people into undesirable behaviours.
There are various sections of the media that facilitated before, writings that were considered more racially inflammatory and the likes of Lincoln Lewis, Freddie Kissoon and others ignored them completely.
These very individuals who profess to be the guardians against the promotion of racism have done nothing to condemn the opposition’s assault against the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) during consideration of the 2012 budgetary estimates. The AFC/APNU voted in Parliament to virtually close down such an important body.
We have seen how the opposition and its provocateurs latched on to another opportunity to incite Guyanese into ethnic strife. No doubt, their removal of the ERC has a bigger objective: to utilise race as their last means of rallying call.
