The prime suspect was arrested yesterday at 16:30 hrs in Corentyne, Berbice.
The man and his wife had quickly fled the house after getting word that the police and the dead man’s family were about to visit the premises in search of him.
Police reported that, at about 18:00 hrs on Tuesday, July 03 last, the body of Gangaram Bharat was found in a shallow grave at the back of a yard at 14th Street, Foulis.
The body bore marks of violence to the head and stomach.
Bharat had been reported missing by a relative on Monday, July 02 last. He had last been seen alive imbibing at a bar in the village with some male residents.
He had indicated to his sister during a visit to her home that his life was in danger, since persons had threatened to kill him because he was asked to relocate from the plot of land he was utilizing for farming of cash crops.
After Bharat went missing, the couple who occupied the house at 14th Street, Foulis hurriedly fled the area, but their actions aroused suspicions from the man’s sister, Gangadai Bharat, who went to search for her brother.
The woman and the police were alerted that something was amiss by a pungent odour emanating from the yard. A closer inspection showed that dirt had been disturbed, which, when dug up, revealed the mutilated body of Bharat, who had been buried there.
