A CONSTABLE of the Kitty Police Station yesterday appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on a charge of accepting a bribe. Sharron Logan (no address given) pleaded not guilty to the charge, which stated that on June 25, at Kitty Police Station, being a public servant, she took a gratification other than a legal remuneration in respect of an official rank, that is to say, she accepted $10,000 from Rawle Timothy.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Patrice Henry, representing the defendant, requested reasonable bail. He said his client was not a flight risk, and would attend court to clear her name.
Police Sergeant Philip Sheriff, prosecuting, had no objection to bail. He informed the court that on June 20, Timothy went to the Kitty Police Station to make a report against his girlfriend. On June 25, Timothy returned to the said station and told Logan that he did not wish to proceed with the matter. The defendant then told the virtual complainant that he and his girlfriend would have to pay her $5,000 each.
Sheriff said the virtual complainant reported the matter to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and a sting operation was set up. The virtual complainant went back and handed over the marked money to the defendant. A group of police ranks then went in and told the defendant that they suspected she had a certain amount of money in her possession, and a search was carried out on her person. The marked money was found in Logan’s pocket.
