OVER 50 young aspiring volleyball youth players, mostly from the village of Buxton on the East Coast of Demerara came out and showed their interest to learn the game of volleyball under the guidance of the female national players and members of Guyana’s top club Young Achievers. The players were taken through the technical aspects of the game, by the coaches, who taught them techniques in small groups at the National Gymnasium, as the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) and Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) observed Olympic Solidarity Day yesterday.
The players were later asked to demonstrate to those who turned up at the venue, what they have learnt during the sessions taught by the top players.
Present were executives of the GVF, including its president Lenny Shuffler, who said he was overwhelmed at the response shown by the number of young players who attended and showed their desire to learn and play the game.
Noting that the national schools volleyball grassroots programme will now take another direction in community development of the game, Shuffler said the village of Buxton will be one of the major beneficiaries.
President of the GOA, K. Juman-Yassin, also shared his sentiments in giving kudos to the GVF in their many programmes in the development of the sport of volleyball in Guyana.
He made mention of the GVF programme that is being organised in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Guyana and the Buxton Community as a significant project which has assisted the restoration of peace to Buxton and its surrounding communities.
Acting secretary of the GVF, Nicholas Fraser, in his short presentation indicated that the day’s programme was indeed a success and will now be looking to improve, and support the existing programme in Buxton.
Coordinator of the Buxton group, Robin Phillips, said that his group will now start a full grassroots programme and will work with the GVF, Demerara Volleyball Association and the national schools programme, with the aim of further developing the sport in the community.
The community of Buxton is expected to see volleyball development in the near future, as the Technical and Organising Committees of the GVF will be making a visit to have a first-hand look at the operations there and make recommendations.
GOA/GVF ‘Volleyball for All’ programme a success
