THE opening of the third edition of the True Champions Volleyball tournament, staged by the Castrol Strikers Volleyball Club, saw defending champions and the country’s number one club Young Achievers come out on top of the 6’s category played last Saturday at the National Gymnasium. The tournament was opened by the Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony MP in the presence of Guyana Volleyball Federation president Lenny Shuffler, former president Reggie Bhagwandin, captain Antonio Rodriguez of the Trade Wind Tankers, officials of Guyana Oil Company, players , officials and other special invitees.
Having lost their first game in the preliminary round to Port Mourant Training School (PMTS) 18-13, Young Achievers did well to rebound and win their remaining matches, to end the tournament on 145 points.
PMTS secured the second position with 133 points, Castrol Strikers were third on 127 points, followed by Port Mourant Jaguars who were two points behind them, New Amsterdam Rollers who took fifth position with 124 while Lusignan occupied the cellar position on 105 points.
Falcons (103), PMTS 2 (85) and Guyana School of Agriculture will move to the Plate play off in the 6’s category.
The action will switch gears to the 2’s and 4’s categories, which will be played at Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara, on a date to be announced.
