Wife allegedly beats husband who went to discuss stormy relationship

A man who claimed that he was attacked by his estranged wife while visiting his mother-in-law’s residence found himself facing an assault charge along with the woman at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, after police seemed not to have entirely believed his alibi. Appearing before Magistrate Nyasha Williams-Hatmin, Kumar Singh told the court that on Saturday, June 9 last, he decided to visit his mother-in-law’s residence at Good Hope, so that he could ask the woman to coax her daughter into leaving him alone, since he no longer wanted the relationship.
He alleged that upon his arrival at his in-law’s residence, his estranged spouse, Yvonne Datadin, along with her brother and other relatives became angry at his mere presence and intentions and proceeded to verbally abuse him.
Datadin, who was at the forefront of proceedings, began pointing her fingers in his face before she chucked and pushed him, then gave him a severe thrashing with her fists, all in the presence of her relatives.
In an attempt to stave off the blows, Kumar Singh said, he threw a single retaliatory slap at Datadin, and escaped from the scene to save himself from further injury. Despite his claims, he pleaded guilty to the assault charge.
Datadin was present in court, and she denied Singh’s claim while telling the court that she had never beaten the man. She subsequently pleaded not guilty to the charge.
After listening to both parties, the magistrate released both Singh and Datadin on $15,000 bail each.
