Akeem Alexander freed of rape and robbery
A Demerara Assize Jury, yesterday, returned what has been described as a ‘surprise verdict’.
After deliberating for two hours, a mixed jury of young people returned a verdict of not guilty of both rape and robbery in favour of 25-year old Akeem Alexander, called “madman” The accused had allegedly committed the offence on a 46-year old security guard. It is said that after the offence was committed, the accused was chased and caught by men who did not lose sight of him.
Yet, the accused led an alibi defence, claiming that the rapist might have had a striking resemblance of him. He also said that he has beads on his penis and that would have caused the victim injury if he was the person who had committed the offence.
Trial Judge, Justice Franklyn Holder who looked surprised at the verdict, upbraided the freed man for the wearing of beads as he said, to cause injury to people.
The jury was discharged.
