– victim had intuition to vacate home for night
– employee apparently planned everything
A SWIFT response to a robbery report by a police night patrol resulted in two bandits being apprehended when they had almost escaped with a safe presumably containing millions of dollars, and other household valuables from a property at Atlantic Ville, East Coast Demerara. The robbery victim, businesswoman Gaitree Dulichand, said she instinctively chose not to sleep at her property Monday night, and instead slept at another property on the West Coast of Demerara.
Upon her return home yesterday morning, she noticed a police sergeant and detectives on her property, whom she later realised had proceeded to secure the then unoccupied property. She then learnt from the police and neighbours that the police had captured two men as they were removing valuables from her property.
She subsequently recognised the apparent ring leader as a young man whom she had employed for several weeks to undertake masonry work on the property.
She surmised that the mason must have procured the services of other bandits to invade the property, knowing she was usually there alone.
The woman disclosed that a neighbour who had noticed unusual movement on the property immediately informed the Sparendaam Police Station what was transpiring, while citing their fears. Within two minutes, neighbours said, a night patrol assigned to the Sparendaam Police Station responded, and swiftly moved in on the bandits, whose sole alternative was to surrender to the lawmen, who had already strategically surrounded the property.
Residents commended the police for averting a major loss to the Dulichand family, while lamenting that it was probably the first time in years that the police had responded so quickly to a crime report.
Mrs. Dulichand also expressed profound gratitude to the police unit that had responded in the face of danger, citing that the property was in complete darkness which would have placed the cops at a disadvantage, because the bandits would have been more secure in the building.
The two men are currently detained at the Sparendaam Police Station, and are expected to be charged soon.
