Edinburgh Village murder accused remanded
TWENTY-six-year-old Vincent Dennis Vandenburg, who is accused of unlawfully killing Lord Edwards, called “Junior” and “Rasta”, at Edinburgh Housing Scheme, East Bank Berbice, was remanded to prison after an indictable charge of murder was read to him by Magistrate Roby Benn at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on Friday. The unemployed youth was not required to plead to the charge that he allegedly killed the labourer during a fracas on April 5 last.
Vandenburg’s addresses were given as the following New Amsterdam locations: Lot 523 Philadelphia Street; LFS Burnham Street; and Tucber Park.
The defendant had allegedly fled from the crime scene after the incident; but, a week later, his attorney, Mursaline Bacchus, handed him over to police at the Central Police Station.
Police Inspector Jairam Ramlakhan, prosecuting, said that on April 5 last, the accused took motor car PKK 206 to repair at Narine Dasrath‘s Mechanic Shop at Edinburgh; and whilst walking along the road in the vicinity of Edwards’s home, an argument arose between the two men, who were known to each other.
The accused is alleged to have left, but returned minutes later with a knife, threatening the forty-three-year-old Edwards, who thereafter armed himself with a four-foot iron bar and pursued the suspect into the mechanic’s yard.
Vandenburgh is alleged to have eluded Edwards, fled the scene, but returned ten minutes later in company of four males, who collectively ran into the yard of Edwards and began scuffling with him, during which Edwards sustained the fatal injuries.
The suspect and his accomplices escaped, while the wounded Edwards stumbled into his neighbour‘s yard, where he reportedly stated what occurred while bleeding profusely from wounds sustained on the right side of his neck, under his ribs, and on his back.
A report was made at Sisters Police Station prior to the injured man being taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Vandenburg is expected to be brought again to court on May 14 for report.
