TREVOR Singh, an overseas-based Guyanese was fined $75,000 with the alternative of one month imprisonment yesterday, for attempting to export birds from Guyana without obtaining a permit from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). He pleaded guilty, before Magistrate Allan Wilson, to the offence which said, on April 7, at Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), he attempted to send out 35 birds of three different species.
Defence counsel, Vic Puran submitted that the defendant went about a different procedure and should be given the full measure of leniency.
The magistrate said, if Singh is in the field of exporting birds, then he should have familiarised himself with the necessary requirements.
Singh agreed to pay the fine and promised to go about the correct way in doing the transaction.
