– as car crashes into GPL compound at Versailles, WBD
ADAM Phillip De Jesus, 26, of 38 Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara, was killed when he crashed the vehicle he was driving outside the Guyana Power & Light (GPL) power plant at Versailles, West Bank Demerara, on Monday at approximately 00:30 hrs, as he was transporting his friend Paul Adams home. The accident occurred a short distance from where De Jesus lived.
Still reeling in shock from the tragic incident as he spoke with this newspaper yesterday, De Jesus’s brother, Andy, recalled that earlier in the evening his brother and his girl friend had gone to the Joe Vieira Park and, at around midnight, he had taken her home. After dropping her off, Adam and his friend Paul Adams stopped at a restaurant, where they bought and ate food then left.
It was while approaching an ‘S’ turn in the vicinity of the Versailles Power Plant that Adam apparently missed the bend, and his vehicle ran off the road and crashed into a utility pole before ending up in the GPL compound. Andy said Adam sustained serious head injuries, as his head had apparently slammed against the utility pole.
Persons living nearby who heard the loud impact hastened to the scene and helped pull the two men out of the crashed vehicle. At that time, De Jesus was still breathing, witnesses said, but he was pronounced dead on arrival at the West Demerara Regional Hospital minutes later.A friend of one of De Jesus’s nephews, who lived near where the accident had occurred, telephoned the family with the tragic news. Andy said the entire family was hard hit by the news, but his mother was even more badly shaken up; because, even though she had been informed about the accident, she could not immediately be told that Adam was dead, and family members had to devise a means of breaking it to her gently, later on.
Reflecting on what a wonderful person his brother had been, Andy said he was a fun person and someone everyone had loved to have around.
“He had lots of friends, and got along well with everyone,” Andy assured. Table tennis was his favourite game.
Andy recalled that, on Sunday, Adam went on a trip to the Essequibo, and returned home to Goed Fortuin on Easter Monday in good enough time to go to the entertainment park with his girlfriend. But little did either of them know that it would have been their last moments together.
Adam Phillip De Jesus had been the eldest of five children for his parents.
He had been a former employee of the New Building Society Limited (NBS), and more recently of El Dorado Trading of Fourth Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, where he had worked for just one month to the time of his death.
He was also a former student of St. Stanislaus College.
He is survived by his mother, Shermin Jardine; foster father, Oswald Savoury; three brothers – Andy De Jesus, Anthony Savoury and Dave Savoury; one sister, Sara-Lee Savoury, and other relatives.
A post-mortem examination on his body is to be performed later.
