Convicted under new law…

Man gets five years imprisonment for touching sexually
MAGISTRATE Adela Nagamotoo, at New Amsterdam Court, in Berbice, on Monday, imposed a five-year prison sentence on a man for touching a fellow villager in a sexual manner.
Rayon Eastman, of Number 30 Village, West Coast Berbice, pleaded guilty to a charge of sexual assault, which was laid under the Sexual Offences Act that was legislated in 2011.
Asked, by the court, what he had to say prior to sentencing, the prisoner declared: “I was making a joke with her.”
Police Corporal, Roberto Figueira, prosecuting, said the 34-year-old virtual complainant was cycling along the Number 30 Pubic Road, when Eastman told her he wanted to have sex, prior to touching her inappropriately, on her breast, buttocks and legs.
The woman immediately rode to Fort Wellington Police Station, where she reported the incident. The police subsequently arrested Eastman.
The prosecutor reminded the court of the seriousness of the charge which was laid under the new Sexual Offences Act and urged the magistrate to impose an appropriate sentence, which will send a message to the wider community.
