Guyana Girls tennis team defeat Panama at Junior Fed Cup

GUYANA’S Girls’ team of Aretta Dey and Nicola Ramdyhan continued to lead the way in Santo Domingo as they clinched their first win at the Junior Fed Cup with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Panama. Nicola Ramdyhan put in her best performance as she fought back after losing the first pro set 4-0 to Daniela Diez by clinching the next two sets 4-2, 5-3 in a nail-biting affair. Ramdyhan despite battling with nerves held on as she was involved in some marathon rallies with Panama’s number one player to put Guyana ahead 1-0.
Aretta Dey completed the 2-0 team win for Guyana with an equally hard-fought  5-3, 4-2 victory over Maria Peralta. Guyana in the process avenged a loss suffered to Panama at the World Junior Championships last year.
Coach Shelly Ramdyhan was pleased with the breakthrough win for the girls who fought well to pull off the win in the highly competitive and acclaimed tournament.
Panama later overcame Trinidad 2-1 in their playoff.
This year marks the first time that Guyana have participated in the Junior Davis and Fed Cup event, which has attracted 17 countries from North/Central America & the Caribbean.
Guyana Boys’ team struggled as they first went down 2-0 to Curacao as Daniel Lopes lost 4-1, 4-2 to Niels Van Dam and Khalif Gobin, in his first singles encounter, was defeated easily by Malik Leven. Number one player Gavin Lewis missed the fixture due to illness. Trinidad later defeated Guyana 2-0
The team will be returning to Guyana today as the tournament winds down to an end.
