FOR me, it was a proud moment when I heard that the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport’s Caribbean Press had launched a book of speeches made by Dr. Cheddi Jagan in the chambers of the National Assembly, on Thursday, March 22, 2012, Kudos to the proud Minister CY&S, Dr. Frank Anthony, who chaired this special event at Parliament, and said that the inspiration for this unique, historical project came as a result of a certain Resolution #46.
This resolution, I learned, was apparently implemented to recognize the many philosophical contributions made by this late great leader during his years in Parliament, serving for over 45 years – 1947 – 1992, when he was elected Executive President in October of 1992, and immediately started the process of rebuilding Guyana.
Present at this propitious occasion were His Excellency, President Donald Ramotar, members of the Jagan clan, dignitaries, Members of Parliament, Ministers of the Government and special Guest Professor David Dabydeen, who edited the 2000 pages of speeches in the seven volumes of the book.
Interestingly enough I read with great satisfaction of Prof. Dabydeen‘s disclosure ,that “the speeches are as is…Commas, colons and the cosmetics of grammar lightly applied so that orality of the expression that Dr.Jagan voiced revealed in all their power”.
Dr. Jagan, without a doubt, always displayed complete loyalty to his country.
President Ramotar, who replaced the late -President as General Secretary of the PPP/C, who then became President himself, remarked, that it was ironic the seven volumes were being launched on Dr.Jagan’s 94th Birth Anniversary, and encouraged all, young or old to read and learn what life was like for this great man and his people.
And it was auspicious enough for the Speaker of the House also, to have received these volumes; and I do hope that other like-minded politicians would duly respect the efforts of this truly wonderful man, who became President, after 28 years of being in the ‘opposition wilderness’ .
Dr. Jagan is often remembered and recognised for his passionate speeches and actions on major political, economic and social issues both at the national level and internationally. His outstanding proposals on the National Democratic Path for Guyana and the New Global Human Order for the Planet are the major hallmarks of his development writings, and I can see how and why some sides of him have rubbed off on the young, hand-picked, former President Jagdeo.
Unfortunately, Guyana and the World at large suffered a serious setback with Dr, Jagan’s untimely passing in 1997, even before he could complete his first term in office as President.
Dr. Jagan holds the distinctive reputation of being the longest serving Member of Parliament.
