I HAVE read Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee letter in the Guyana Chronicle captioned “Dangers lurk on the horizon “. It is amazing how a newspaper can easily gulp down a piece of information that came its way through the grapevine or a deep throat source and pretend that that information is credible and deemed publishable.
The gullible in society have a tendency to believe everything published in a newspaper, including ‘What the Stars say’. Many go so far to believe that if the story weren’t true, it would not have been published!
Sir, there is nothing balanced and objective about reporting when newspaper journalists’ opinions become the news. Most Guyanese at home and abroad know it’s all about increasing profits and circulation.
Sir, please be informed that for nineteen years your party was in power and still is for at least the next five years but some blame must be squarely be placed on the Government of the day.
For too long your Government allowed the anti- Government News media to run with whatever they chose under freedom of expression with no severe consequences.
When propaganda news by anti Government media is out to the man on the street you and your Government take too long to respond in kind, therefore allowing the gullible to digest it.
Then there are times when Government Ministers are being slandered and again serious actions are never taken by Government against these anti Government News Media.
From the moment a Government Minister is being slandered and is on print serious court actions must be taken immediately with speedy trials to hit these anti-Government news media real hard in the pocket book where it counts most.
Fines and/or serious jail time must amount in the billions of dollars against these anti-Government, ‘so- called journalists’ and newspaper bosses so as to put a real stop to their rush to print.
Sir, you can’t blame SN or KN for not printing the survey that is quite favourable about Guyana’s track record on public safety compared to other Caricom countries.
What you can and must go after in a serious and most deadly way is when these anti-Government news media slander any Government Minister.
If Government cannot take serious and deadly actions against these media outlets, then you can govern for the next umpteen years and they will not stop, no matter how bitter you or anyone complain.
The ball is in government’s court to take serious action against these anti Government news media.
