Sophia carpenter on $150,000 bail for assaulting wife

A 43-year-old carpenter of Sophia was at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court yesterday put on $150,000 bail after he was charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm on his wife. Sean Marshall allegedly inflicted wounds on his wife, Abiola Marshall, on March 2 at his home.
The man pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The defendant was represented in court by counsel Gwendolyn Bristol and prosecuting for the state was police sergeant, Bernard Brown.
The virtual complainant made her appearance in court wearing bandages and complaining about constant pain.
Prosecutor Brown objected to the bail application made by counsel Bristol, on the ground that the defendant is likely to commit other offences of this nature.
Counsel Bristol retaliated by stating she is aware of the assault charge pressed upon her client, and said that the virtual complainant also has a damage to property charge against her by the defendant which, is a forthcoming charge to be read in court.
Counsel Bristol managed to secure bail for her client, and the man is to report to the station twice a week. He was also warned to avoid further contact with his wife, pending the outcome of the matter.
The woman who will be staying at her sister’s residence in the meantime, requested an officer to go to the defendant’s house to collect the rest of her belongings.
They will be making another appearance in court on March 30 for trial.
