Well-organised Rotary job fair sees poor attendance

–plans on stream to make event annual
A JOB Fair organised by the Rotary Club of Demerara to assist those in need of jobs to actually find one saw participation from 15 companies, all having vacancies.
The event, which ran from 09:00hrs to 16:00hrs and was held at Marian Academy on Carifesta Avenue, catered for employers telling prospective employees what their expectations were, and what positions were available.
Persons had opportunity to fill out application forms and set up appointment times for interviews. A recruitment agency was also on hand to record information and place applicants to the jobs most appropriate for them.
This was the first Job and Career Fair organised by the service organisation, and the aim was to create a forum for employers to interact with prospective employees in a relaxed atmosphere.

According to Renata Chuck-A-Sang, a Rotarian, the Club was pleased with the support from the business community. Among the businesses on hand were Church’s Chicken, John Fernandes Limited, Global Technology, Sterling Products Limited, the Bank of Nova Scotia, ANSA McAL, Guyana Association for Alternative Medicine, and the Insurance Institute of Guyana.
Regrettably, only about 100 persons attended the event, and organisers have said there was capacity to deal with many more persons than had been present. Nevertheless, there is the intention to make the fair an annual activity.
The Club would have appreciated if “much more young people” had made use of the opportunity, and had kept the employers “busy on their toes all day,” Ms. Chuck-A-Sang declared.
The Club had also arranged to conduct seminars geared towards training prospective employees on how to dress for an interview, how to behave during an interview, how to answer questions well, and how to prepare a resume, among other things. Those who served as lecturers were Rotarians in this field of expertise.
Ms. Chuck-A-Sang explained that the Rotary Club has five areas of service, one being vocational; hence the event was organised for those people who are in need of jobs.
She said the four Rotary Clubs in Georgetown collaborated to stage the project, because of its magnitude.
