–officials urge students to embrace a future in the sciences
SCHOOLS in Region Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara) are upbeat as they prepare for the National Finals of the Science, Mathematics and Technology Fair, scheduled for Berbice in April 2012.
This was disclosed Thursday by Regional Education Officer Ms. Marilyn Jones-O’Donoghue during her remarks to open the Regional Science, Mathematics and Technology Fair at the Leonora Secondary School, West Coast Demerara.
Noting that the exhibits were of high quality and creativity, O’Donoghue expressed confidence that the region will do well at the national level.
Among those at the opening ceremony were Region Three Chairman Julius Faerber, National Science Coordinator Ms. Petal Jetoo, Senior Subject Specialist Ms. Wendella Roberts, and other regional education officials.
In remarks at the fair, Chairman Faerber stated that the world was moving apace, both scientifically and technologically. He said, “We cannot sit back and allow others to file pass us… We have the talent, all we have to do is to harness the resources and get down to the task of building our own confidence.”
Pointing to the exhibits, Faerber posited that students have shown a very high degree of creativity and imagination, which augurs well for the future development of our society.
The two-day activity was declared open by Ms Petal Jetoo, who noted that one aim of the fair was to build students’ confidence in applying science for industrial and technological innovations. She urged that students embrace science and mathematics, pointing out that students have a real opportunity to be guided by those subjects into their career paths. Jetoo posited that students stand to benefit when they are involved in such activities, noting that science and mathematics help to build creative skills for thinking and reasoning. She congratulated the schools for the excellent innovations, as were evident by their exhibits, and she urged them to remain focused as they seek to bring glory to Region Three.
Various primary and secondary schools across the region are participating in the fair in such categories as Agri Science, Home Economics, Visual Arts, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.
The two-day fair is being held under the theme: “Science and Technology: Unlocking Potentials For Green Societies.”
