… Conquerors, GDF reach semis
HOSTS Fruta Conquerors and the Guyana Defence Force football teams made it through to the semi-final round of the annual NaMilCo Football Festival following victories in the quarterfinal round on Friday night at the Tucville Playfield. Tonight the action continues as Conquerors meet GDF in the semi-final showdown at 21:00hrs. The night starts at 19:00hrs with the Riddim Squad versus Beacon United battle.
Riddim Squad were re-invited to the tournament after being knocked out by Alpha United, the team that opted out of the event.
These teams are now in the hunt for the grand prize of one million dollars as a new champion will be crowned.
The runner-up prize is set at $500 000 while the third- and fourth-place finishers will cart off $200 000 and $100 000 respectively
On Friday night, young Pernel Shultz, National Under-17 player, led the way for his senior squad with an amazing hat-trick.
GFC shocked the Tucville home crowd when they drew first blood in the seventh minute after Alden Lerrence found the back of the next.
Conquerors then stepped up their offensive game and eventually found the equaliser thanks to Shultz who recorded his first goal.
The second half saw Shultz scoring in the 50th minute before his teammate Jahal Greaves extended the lead in the 63rd minute. GFC’s Selwyn Williams pulled one back in the 71st minute but that was erased as Shultz completed his hat-trick in the 87th minute.
Following that match was the GDF/Santos showdown with the latter matching skills with the technical-playing army team.
However, it was the early breakthrough by Desford Williams in the tenth minute that gave GDF the upper hand and also the eventual victory.
