MICHAEL Scott (no address given) was fined $5,000 with the alternative of six months imprisonment yesterday, for assaulting his reputed wife, Yonette Bacchus. Magistrate Allan Wilson imposed the monetary penalty on him, after he pleaded guilty to the February 21 unlawful assault.
Police Sergeant Tracymay Gittens, prosecuting, said Scott became annoyed when the virtual complainant refused to tell him to whom she was speaking on the telephone and slapped her.
But Scott alleged that, when he asked Gittens the question, instead of answering, she spat in his face and that is why he hit her.
However, the woman lamented that, for the past two years, she endured domestic problems.
The defendant also said he gave Bacchus money to buy medicine for their sick baby and she used it to buy a phone card.
The magistrate placed Gittens on a one year bond and warned him to be of good behaviour.
